Collection: Black Tea

Black tea is one of the most popular teas around the world.  Some cultures refer to it as red tea because of the color that is produced after steeping.  There are two types of black tea, Camellia sinensis var sinensis, originates from China and the Assamese plant, C. sinensis var. assamica.

What makes a black tea unique is how, or what, it is blended with.  For example, the English dote on Earl Gray which is a back tea with bergamot oil.  The Irish breakfast tea is a blend of several black teas, usually Assam tea.

Black tea is graded on its quality using a 4 tier scale.  Whole-leaf are usually the best quality. But the part referred to as "Orange pekoe" are the most precious.  The fannings, are the particles that break down from the whole-leaf and are considered medium-grade loose teas. The smaller fanning and dust left over can be found in harsh, but quick steeping tea bags and often lack the natural sweetness of the whole leaf.
